Fox vs. gray squirrels

  • abloss by abloss

How do I classify what looks like a fox/gray squirrel mixture? I haven't seen any yet in these photos, but I do see them in Chicagoland. (There is one at Montrose with a gray body and distinctly reddish tail...)

There is a lot of variation in gray squirrel coloration. Gray squirrels can appear confusingly red. It's helpful to look at the belly (white for gray squirrel) and the outline around the tail (white or light colored for gray, black for fox squirrel).
