Chicago Wildlife Watch Talk
Just a knot!
Tough one, but I think you are correct!
Hmm this is unusual! To me, it looks like a raccoon on the right and a dog on the left, with both animals facing away from the camera
ha! it sure does.
It looks like there's been a good rain!
yes! we love getting these glimpses into species interactions!
hard to say! I think it could just be the light reflecting off of the water (there is a building just out of the frame of the picture)
nice catch!
That looks like a young rabbit to me. It's a little blurry but you can see the elongated nose and big ears.
that's a great one!
The Chicago parks have some beautiful buildings, some that date back to the World's Fair in 1893!
I agree!
Hmmm I suspect raccoon based on scale (compared to branch on the ground) but definitely a tough one!
actually, given the size relative to the camera, I think this is a deer passing through!
I think it could be a cat given the tail and overall dark coloration. Raccoons would have more variation.
good catch!
Wow, what a nice looking red fox!
The mottled fur suggests coyote to me!
Yes, I think it might be another rabbit!
awww
wow, i think you might be right. good catch!
yes..that was there for many years! it has since disappeared.
yes!
ha-so true!
Thanks for your patience! You will be rewarded with animal photos!
Sometimes the camera miss the animal that triggers it because the animal is moving to quickly through the frame
Yes, cameras can be triggered by humans, cars, moving vegetation.
yes! good catch!
awesome!
yes, lights from homes or commercial areas.
That looks like a fox squirrel! Very red belly and ears, black outline on tail.
interesting markings!
great pic!
It's a flicker. They are often seen foraging on the ground! https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Northern_Flicker/id
I think you might be right. We have seen woodcock at this site in the past.
Agreed!
Good eye! Appears to be a house sparrow.
cool! it's actually a fence with lights overhead, not a train.
This is a deer! It's hard to get perspective but the camera is looking down on the deer's back and it is very close
very interesting coloration on this guy!
very cool!
i think you are correct! Cool shadow!
As you say, @katayfaya, I think we are looking at the back of the rabbit, hopping away . I see two rabbit ears!
Yes! I actually see two gray squirrels here. One in the middle right as you say and one farther back in the middle.
yes! that tail is good indicator, along with the shaggy light-colored fur.
It looks like the animal is pretty close to the camera so it looks larger.
The photo before this one is definitely a coyote, so I'd lean toward coyote, especially with the head shape, but the tail is definitely odd
It's rare to see more than one skunk in a photo. This is amazing!!
nice one!
Porcupines are not found in the Chicago area. This is an opossum.
That's a tough one. I don't really see a hoof either, but I would go with deer based on the leg color and slenderness.
We see some urban raccoons that are very large! So much yummy human food.
Raccoon is correct! It is turning its head away from view. The rounded back & gray mottled fur are also characteristic of this species.
nice rabbit close up!
the bear (dog) is back!
Looks like a squirrel, yes!
Yes, I agree w/ coyote. No black markings on legs, the tail is more tapered than that of a red fox, and the body is overall stockier too.
yes! i see a mask and ringed tail.
Please mark both human and dog, thanks!
I wish @WillowSkye!
You are correct. I see a black outline on a red tail.
That it is-- the zoo van is covered with exotic animals! You can't miss us!
Yes, I see a gray squirrel back/tail!
Beautiful! #dailyzoo
Yes!!
that's a tough one! there's something there but not sure what. I'd guess coyote too.
I think that's just some odd light spots!
yes, i think so! opossum fur is typically more fuzzy and shaggy than raccoon fur, which tends to be shorter and more dense.
gray is correct! if it were a fox squirrel you would see a lot more red on its body and black in the tail.
good eye!
The size does look a little off, but this is a coyote. If it were a gray fox there would be a dark line down the center of the tail.
Missing a tail?
Gray squirrel. The key is the tail. The white fur means gray squirrel. They have a lot of color variation which can definitely be confusing!
A very interesting tail indeed.
As a corgi owner I can definitively say those legs are too long for a corgi 😃
Also no dark markings on legs or ears like a red fox would have.
I think this one might be a coyote based on it's coloring. It has more white than a red fox and is generally larger.
Yes, opossum. You can just barely see the light-colored head. Muskrat tails are dark and their fur would be more uniformly reddish brown.
I also think raccoon but not sure what angle we are seeing! I do see a ringed tail in the back..
Yes, this looks like a raccoon (rounded, pale ears, mottled short fur, rounded back).
yep, another raccoon!
Hmmm, I think this could be the back of a rabbit?
yes! good catch.
I don't think there are pheasant in the city, but this could be a Canada goose!
This is a grackle.
I agree, I think this one is a coyote.
yes, you are correct!
Definitely a squirrel. Fox tails will be longer and bushier (and generally red or mottled depending on species). Likely a gray.
That's a tough one. Hard to tell if the white we see if part of the body. I'm thinking cat.
I agree! I can see some tail rings.
You are correct. I see a black outline around the tail.
I believe this is a raccoon. Larger body, shorter, dense fur. Ears are more pointed and not dark like an opossum.
opossum!
muskrat! as indicated by fuzzy, reddish fur and smaller body size.
Yes, gray squirrel! Note the white fur "halo" on the tail. Fox squirrels will have a black halo.
I agree with opossum! Also, their fur is generally more "shaggy" than that of raccoons.
That's a tough one. Based on the size (this fence is only a few feet tall) i'm thinking a domestic cat?
yes, hard to see the one in the back but the body shape looks like a robin.
Hard to say..I have seen them forage in close proximity!
My guess is an opossum. The fur texture is a little shaggier than a raccoon, light-dark coloring, and small rounded ears.
You are correct! You can see the blurred eye mask.
Looks to be a coyote, based on body size (longer legs than fox), and not mottled throughout. But thanks for looking out for them!
Look like starlings to me from the wing pattern.
Raccoons can be brown in coloration sometimes too.
It's tough but I agree with Mason. I think I see some subtle striping on the tail, and the rounded body shape seem more raccoon-like.
You are correct!
Difficult to say. It's likely a deer as it appears to be close to the camera (The cameras are place a few feet off of the ground).
Curious deer!
I don't think it is big enough to be a fox but it's definitely something...almost looks like a woodchuck.
oh my!
#foxsquirrel #vigilance
nice looking #opossum
No problem! Flagging tape could be used for various things, i.e., to mark trees to cut down, study plots, or plants of interest.
Based on the black/tan outline on the tail, that actually looks like a fox squirrel to me. I think the pink is flagging (see left too).
correct!
😃
I think it's just an illusion. Sorry!
I think you might be right..the tracks in front are rabbit but that shape in the back looks like the raccoons in previous photos.
strange!
you are correct! Note the dark, rounded ears that are characteristic of an opossum
Agree! A fox would have a smaller muzzle and black markings on the ears.
Nice head down by an opossum!
Coyote?
Unfortunately, I think it's empty
Yes! What a cutie.
Tough to say. It could be a rabbit jumping out of the frame.
See this blog post! http://www.lpzoo.org/blog/chicago-wildlife-watch/what-kind-squirrel
No, although this squirrel has some rusty coloration, it is actually a gray squirrel. Note the white fur outlining the tail.
http://www.sandhillnature.com/journal/2011/02/squirrel-and-rabbit-tracks/. Rabbit tracks make a Y shape and squirrel a W shape!
caught on camera!
Looks like the back of an opossum! Based on the body shape, fur texture, and tail.
I agree, and the front foot is longer than that of a rat.
I think so too! So hard to tell with the overexposure.
REALLY hard to say...maybe a dog?
Please categorize both dog and human in this photo.
very nice 😃
yes! some of our sites do controlled burns. Amazingly the cameras survive!
Yes, I agree with coyote! It is leaning on one leg and scratching with the back leg. Head is facing away from the camera.
beautiful!
good eye! I think I just see 4. 1 in tree, one climbing down, 1 at base, and 1 at base of tree to the right.
Unfortunately I only see vegetation and fallen trees 😕
watch out!
I agree! Looks like a golden retriever mix based on the coloration.
Love it!
Hard to say but I think this one might be a rabbit. Based on the mottled fur and shape.
Yes, I think I see an eye mask!
It's hard to tell but I think that could just be the bark of the tree peeling?
cool photo!
Yes this happens occasionally with the cameras (sometimes red, too). Usually they fix themselves.
It's hard to say for sure, but probably 3-5 yo. The velvet covers the antler and provides vascularization. It peels off before shedding.
I think it might just be the sunlight and shadows playing tricks!
I agree with jaxbaq!
Looks like a dog to me. I think I see a leash extending out toward the right of the animal.
I agree with rabbit! I think it's curled up facing away from us. Based on size and arch of back.
Yes, this is likely a deer. Based on the height of the camera, only deer are tall enough to get an up close shot like this.
Yes, I think it is a deer resting!
Sadly, I think it's just a plastic bag.
Yes, I agree!
I think you are correct @33hummingbird.
Good catch @jaxbaq. I didn't see the one on the right at first either!
You are correct, it is a robin
I think it could be an antler!
Most likely, yes! Based on arched back and fur coloration.
yes, good catch!
Yes, I see the rings on the tail! Raccoon.
great job!
I agree. I think I can see the black mask around the eyes as well!
I agree @ForestPreserve. Welcome to all!
Northern flicker!
Great to see!
Rabbit?
Yes, I agree.
It's tough to tell. I am leaning toward raccoon due to the coloration and I think I see an ear?
Looks like an opossum! Note the dark legs and hairless tail.
I think this might be a raccoon due to the curved body shape and fur texture/coloring. It's a tough one!
Gray foxes are typically smaller and have black markings down the length of the tail. I think this is a coyote.
I think you are right 😦
It sure is! Good eye.
Is there an opossum? I see the eye mask of a raccoon.
It's likely a deer. Cameras are placed at least a few feet off of the ground, and deer are the only animals tall enough to investigate them!
What a good looking woodchuck!
I think you are correct with deer....it looks like there is a leg extending toward the bottom of the photo!
This is tough. I initially thought cat but now I am thinking young coyote due to the canid-looking snout.
Nice to see a juvenile 😃
I think this might be a cat. A mink would have a lower, more sausage-shaped body. We do see mink, but not frequently.
great photo!
It's true, we have! And this is a really unusual-looking rabbit!
Yes, based on size, I think squirrel is correct. My first thought was fox, until I saw the scale!
Yes! They are quite common in grassland/urban areas.
Yes, I think it's a cat as well!
I agree with coyote, possibly a juvenile. The tapered tail is a good indicator.
Looks like a deer taking a rest on the ground.
It looks like a rabbit to me!
😃 Love a good woodchuck photo!
We frequently see opossums out and about in the daytime during the winter!
Unfortunately I think it is just a stone 😦
Yes it looks like a fox squirrel. Note the black tail outline. Gray squirrels will have a white tail outline. Very pretty!
Actually I think this is an opossum. You can just barely see the dark rounded ears.
Unfortunately, this could be a case of a camera over triggering, not the same photo. I am familiar with this site and these cars are parked.
I agree! Note the hairless tail, pointy muzzle, and darker legs that are characteristic of an opossum.
Yes, red fox! You've picked up the dark legs and ears.
Based on the fur mottling and general size, I also think woodchuck. But I'm not sure exactly what angle we are looking at!
Looks like 2 to me! One at the base of the tree and one in the lower right corner.
Great photo! You are correct about the behavior; as such I think "neither" would be the best choice.
This is actually a red fox. The tail is long and bushy. Note the black markings on the front feet. Gray foxes are more mottled and cat-like.
It's unlikely a woodchuck would be active at night, so it's probably a raccoon based on the curved back and fur texture.
Yes!
A little opossum! Note the dark rounded ears.
I think it's a gray squirrel with the longer fluffy tail.
LIkely a dog given the tail.
It's hard to say with the b&whi photos, but I think it's a gray squirrel as you can see some variation in color on the tail.
I agree with rabbit!
This is a tough one, but I think it's cat with a striped tail. The body shape, head size, and feet don't quite look like a raccoon.
Based on the arched back and size, I think it could be muskrat. Mink are longer and more weasel-like, but we also get them occasionally too.
I agree.. you can see the pointed snout and dark ears characteristic of an opossum.
Yes, I think you are correct @ForestPreserve!
yes! we get lots of domestic cats in our photos.
Correct, @juliamk. It can be tough differentiate squirrels with the B&Whi photos.
I agree with opossum. It looks like he is turning his head back to the right.
cat?
I think you are right! Looks like a squirrel tail to me..likely fox squirrel due to the black outline and reddish color. Great catch!
Great shot!
It looks to me like a gray squirrel heading away from the camera. Note the tail.
Also the coyote coat is going to be more gray and brown, and more varied in color.
I don't think it's a woodchuck, but it could be a semi-aquatic mammal like a muskrat!
I think that actually good be an opossum due to the dark ears and body shape. We do see opossums with very light-colored fur.
It's an odd angle, but yes, just deer. You can see the white tail on the deer on the left.
Another opossum!
I think opossum! I can just barely see the dark ears.
Agree with head up!
This deer is still able to survey its environment so I would categorize this as head up!
Based on the hunched body and fur coloration, I think this is a raccoon!
Likely an opossum with light body and dark legs. Woodchucks generally are not active at night.
I agree! Probably a cat with its tail down.
This is a tricky one, but I think it is a coyote about to roll in something. The fur is longer and more shaggy than that of a gray fox.
No, I think you are correct!
Yes, you can see a person to the right which suggests that it is a dog
Nice red fox!
Good question.Although the squirrel is eating, his position allows him to survey the environment for risk, so I would stick with head up!
Based on the size and the arched back, it's likely a raccoon.
I think this could be an opossum walking away. You can just make out the light-colored left hind foot, darker fur on the legs, and ears.
We do have mink in Chicago!
@nancybohrer you can enter each coyote separately to note different behaviors
Yes, I agree! The back is rounded and you can barely make out the white cottontail.
Likely an opossum based on the darker fur on the legs and overall shaggy fur.
Based on the ears and the large hind foot, I think that is a rabbit.
Occasionally we get flying squirrels that can look like this, but usually it's a leaf that gets caught by the IR flash.
I agree! You can see the contrasting dark ears too.
I think it's a fox based on the tail (not tapered, round, length is in proportion to the body).
Based on the mottled fur pattern, it could be a rabbit.
This is a tough one. It's unlikely a woodchuck would be active at night. Based on the size and shape, I would go with raccoon too.
That's a tough one. The shape and light color of the ears suggest juvenile raccoon to me.
You can just barely make out the dark mask around the eyes, so I think this is a raccoon.
That's a tough one. Based on the fur texture & coloration, I think it could be an opossum.
Think bigger!
Based on body size, it's a rat!
Yes! Cats are not uncommon at some of our sites.
Looks like a coyote to me. I can barely make out the nose/muzzle.
That's a tough one. I think I see white fur, and brown/gray fur so that makes me think gray squirrel.
yes! maybe an early morning shot?
Gray squirrels and fox squirrels can be hard to tell apart. Here is an example of a fox squirrel (tan fur and black outline on the tail).
That looks like a small dog to me, perhaps a terrier. I think that is the profile of the dog's head facing left.
I agree. I think it's a juvenile opossum!
I agree! I think it's a coyote based on the shape of the head and tail.
It's actually a wagon 😃
I can barely make out the rings on the tail. I think it is a raccoon!
This tail looks pretty long for a deer. Dog?
I think this might be an opossum! Some clues are the low body, darker legs, a light colored snout, & rounded ears.
Based on the tail, I agree that it is a squirrel.
Just a knot!
Tough one, but I think you are correct!
Hmm this is unusual! To me, it looks like a raccoon on the right and a dog on the left, with both animals facing away from the camera

the bear (dog) is back!

Yes, I agree w/ coyote. No black markings on legs, the tail is more tapered than that of a red fox, and the body is overall stockier too.
yes! i see a mask and ringed tail.
Please mark both human and dog, thanks!

opossum!
muskrat! as indicated by fuzzy, reddish fur and smaller body size.
Yes, gray squirrel! Note the white fur "halo" on the tail. Fox squirrels will have a black halo.
I agree with opossum! Also, their fur is generally more "shaggy" than that of raccoons.

😃
😃
I agree!
