Chicago Wildlife Watch Talk
Maybe I'm seeing things, but could that be a snake?
Fox #squirrel ... ? Or gray?
Young #coyote interested in the scent bag?
awesome possum?
He is something else!!
I saw a fellow like this guy while out for a jog a couple nights ago!
Ah, that's what it is. I had no idea -- guessed woodchuck. Was just a furry lump to me!
They love that scent bag. Great pic!
The point of the scent bags, as I understand it, is that the animals are already in the area; the bag just gets 'em in front of the camera!
Looks that way to me!
Well, stop poaching images, sillies. 😃
Always nice when the unappreciated cameras do good work! 😄
Lump of fur! Gray squirrel?
snow #bunny #rabbit
Talk about a stumper. I knew it couldn't be a skunk -- they hibernate!
Aww, goldens are adorable.
Cutest possum ever! 😄
Tough one! Mason?
Oh, that is a great one. #dailyzoo
Wiley E. loves his scent bag! 😄
Oh, WOW! That's a new one for me! #dailyzoo
I think I'm going to do a #dailyzoo post about #actionsquirrel 😃
That was my thought too. I first thought fox for the front, but was sure the back was gray, so probably both gray.
Blurry #deer #stag
Another camera-loving #deer !
Two squirrels... fox or gray?
The actioniest of action squirrels!
Coyote, I think! Black-tipped tail, not black stockings on the legs. 😃
Went with rabbit based on prominent eyeshine.
Some folks call raccoons "trash pandas." 😃
Adorable! #deer #fawn
I see textbook #coyote ... Too big for a fox, and as you said, no black stockings. 😃
Nice to see something at this camera, which tends to just get those leaves! 😃
The white face is a clue, too, right? #opossum
Nice #deer #stag
Species interaction! 😄 (sort of) That 'coon is definitely interested in the scent bag.
Blur in the lower left corner... very tough.
I said cat, too.
Definitely one #deer, but is that a second eyeshine in the distance?
doe, a #deer, a female deer
Broken for me too. Looks like a bad file.
Coyote on the move? Whatever it is, it's hustling. Mason?
Head very much up!
#deer butt!
Hey buddy! #raccoon
Aww, #coyote pup!
They're so beautiful. Don't get enough respect IMO. 😃
That's actually a tag group. You did that by tagging it as #actionsquirrel ! 😃
I assume these are lights in the distance, not eyeshine?
I'd like to imagine woodchuck, but I've seen muskrat around Chicago, so I imagine muskrat is more likely?
#dailyzoo love it!
Adorable! #dailyzoo
fluffy #coyote ! #headdown
Cute! Coyote puppies! 😃
wow, what a great find @aneg !! 😃 love it! #dailyzoo
I think indeed it is a #fox !
Foxes are smaller and more reddish, I think. The coloration here highly suggests coyote. 😃
There's something in the middle to the right of the tree trunk that sort of looks like a critter with eyeshine. Is it not?
Love this one; great find!
Good eye! This project really helps understand how powerful camouflage really is.
Happens occasionally. Sorry about it. Just reload; it's hopefully reasonably rare.
#dog I think... not a coyote, right?
#opossum
#raccoon party!
I stand corrected!
Deer pics are always fantastic. Good eye on the back two!
Hmm... I think this is just overexposure? No?
Cute fox! Great pic! #dailyzoo
Hey, a pack of them! Very cool.
What a clear shot. Beautiful!
#dailyzoo 😄
Looks squirrelish to me?
Or at least #dailyzoo 😃
It's still a real pic, though! 😄
if it doesn't have a Bushness label now, it never did. This is just a really freakin' cool image! #dailyzoo
Horrors beyond imagination, I'm sure!
Cute fawn!!
I wonder if this was a smelly camera to retrieve. 😄
I still hope there's some really cool science-y reason why deer love the cameras.
Hahahah! I love this one! #twospecies
another deer being waaayyy too into the camera
Can confirm it IS an animal... great eyes!! No idea what, though...
Yep! They like to do that in the snow. 😃
zoom!
Whoa. And where is this camera? Can we ask? 😄
I'm stumped. It doesn't appear to be in other nearby pictures. ACH000cztk ... Raccoon is best guess?
http://urbancoyoteresearch.com/ ... !
lovely!!
Hey @uoni -- you don't need to mark these, but if you were going to, you could do it with #tilted ... makes them easier to identify. 😃
#coyote
gone fishin'
I definitely vote antler. No plant around here looks like that!
Hm, I'll look into tomorrow if we're having duplicate images for some reason...
I'm thinking raccoon, actually? That sloped back...
Cool find! I love multiple species in one photo!
They love the cameras!!
Unbelievable. 😃
Looks like two birds, actually!
It really doesn't look like a Chicagoland environment, does it? Spooky.
I wonder if there's anything to be extrapolated from how much deer seem to like putting their noses in the cameras? #scientist
It's possible. #raccoon #young ...?
Hahahah! Great #deer
Rabbits ARE the eyeshine champs... any big eyeshine is a good bet on #rabbit
forwaaaaard... MARCH! #goose #geese #bird
#doe a #deer
That is absolutely gorgeous. The fawns are so lovely!!
Nice find!!
Speak of soccer, GOOOOAAAALLLL USA ... and we are waaaaay off topic. #raccoon :p
I don't know how we could manage without you anymore, @WillowSkye ! You're not allowed to leave! 😃
Two reasons, @Briren16 ... one, this isn't winter, and two, deer don't hibernate! 😃
Good question. No clue. #whatis
Adorable #rabbit !!
Good find! Multiple-species pics are rare. Love it!
woah, trippy
I think that's just the scent bag lure? 😃
Almost missed the #coyote !
#buck #deer
Great find!!
Yeah, #raccoon
South? South what? 😃
I guess the latter. And no such thing as posting too much! 😃
#raccoon
Oh, man, every time I think I've seen the best deer photo, a new one pops up!
I know the tale of seeing this particular tail being raised... runrunrunrunrun!!
boing!
You know, some people hate coyotes, but I find it wonderfully life-affirming that handsome fellows like this live and thrive among us. 😃
I have no idea, but what a gorgeous shot. I was recently collecting some of our best Zoo images for a project... wish I'd had this one!!
Better here than in front of my car. 😄
Ooh, lovely look at the velvet.
The spot on the left hind leg? I think that's just normal coloration for a deer. http://bit.ly/1PQJAGy
We allow for a little bit of anthropomorphic "aww" here. 😃
Mystery lump. Raccoon? #whatis
Love seeing them in the daytime!
Very nice find!
I'm fairly certain this is a canine, but I'm not sure what type. Tapered-off tail definitely suggests coyote to me...
Do deer even have any natural predators in Chicago any more (besides us)? Can coyotes take full-grown deer?
No problem. Someone else will catch it! 😃
Yeah, some of these mowers are intense! 😃
Good eye!! Took me a moment!! I would be a very hungry wolf.
I think it's amazing how the scent bags can appeal to ALL the animals! I'd think that what attracts a coyote would scare a deer.
Great find!! 😄
Right up there in the camera! 😄
Probably the camera went off while being transported to or from the site!
Yep, that's a scent bag.
Tail shape says #coyote to me.
And can you blame me? 😄
Hey Janet! Nice to see you here at CWW. 😃
Haha, he thinks the camera is food. 😃
Lovely pair, too!
You can tell by the more roundish tail that it's a fox. Coyote tails are a bit more tapered off at the tip.
Little trickster! Now the team knows what happened to that lure. Surprised it doesn't happen more often.
Very clear, cute #opossum pic!
Cute! Great find!
Wow, he looks just like Rocket, standing up like that! 😄
Big furry lump. #whatis
Sometimes cameras that are left facing the street end up taking a lot of similar-looking photos by accident. We're trying to improve this!
I agree #deer -- good eye!
No worries! Many people view and classify each image. Someone will spot it! #deer
I think you are correct. That looks like a #skunk tail.
Sometimes the cameras get flipped by accident (or by tampering!)
The fawns are so cute!!
Hm... could be a rabbit...
It's this one camera taking many, many photos. We get a couple of those in each data set. 😕
I've seen bucks together before on golf courses around Chicago. I'm surprised that two bucks will hang together... prob not during the rut?
I hope it doesn't show up so often that we need a name for it or anything... !
I think the team should probably trash all classifications of fluffy things from this particular camera. I did it, too! 😄
Ooh, I'm torn. It might be a red fox, but I see a dark tip on the tail, not a light one. Might also be a #coyote
Looks like a #skunk to me.
Wow, that's odd. Never seen anything like that before. Science team, what's that big growth?
Puffy tail also suggests #red_fox
Don't forget about "dark mode" ... the crescent moon in the upper right of the page. It might help you out!
It's a #deer, just a pudgy one. 😃
Yep, it's an attractant to try to get the animals in front of the camera!
Definitely a #skunk, at least!
#opossum smelling something on the tree!
Cute!!
Oh this may be my favorite to date! So cute. 😃
Is it really a mink?! Can we get a scientist confirmation? They're so rare!
Zoom! Good catch by you and by the camera!
I'm 99% sure this is a possum.
Ooh, is it a cat? I love seeing any meeting of two species. The possum looks spooked! ACH0004qyn might be slightly helpful...
rawrrr 😃
Hm... I'm not really sure what that is. #whatis ... ?
The ultimate #whatis --!
We had Arthur before, perhaps now we have Walt? 😃
Is it still an Arthur if we're picking up legit animals on the camera? 😃
I think so, yes!
Classified as nothing, but there's a #bird #shadow --!
Aww, I love it! 😃
Found a deere... a John Deere #mower --! :p
#deer very much #headdown
Tough pic! 😄
Good find!!
Yeah, sometimes you can see a long string of people and dogs... but that makes finding a wild critter more special! 😃
That's okay. Your best guess is all we're asking for! 😃
It's a coyote, I'm fairly sure. This might help you out! 😃 http://www.lpzoo.org/blog/conservation-field-diaries/chicago-canine-close
I actually think coyote, going by the size and the shape of the tail?
I have no idea! #scientist #whatis
"Nothing here" just meas no animals. 😃 Thanks!!
The black tip on the tail is often a tip-off (heh) that it's a coyote! 😃
I wonder what sort of scents are in the scent bag!
Looks like a golden retriever to me by that fluff on the underside of the tail.
Now it's fixed. Might just take a moment. 😃
Please be sure that you actually classify the image as a human... if you do, it shoudn't appear here in the thumbnail! 😃
Woodchuck ... ? In the bottom right?
Almost missed the #deer !
We've had a few flooding events over the past few years... I wonder which one this was.
Last time we had a plant that set off the camera constantly, we coped by naming it "Arthur." Got a name for this vine? 😄
Was having a bad afternoon, loads of empties, then finally a #skunk --! 😃
I suspect opossum (see the snout?) They show up very blurry often... maybe it's the white fur, or they just move quickly?
I am fairly sure that it is just a scent bag to attract animals. The big blue button in the top right will take you back to classifying! 😃
Wow, he startled me when I finally saw him! "HELLO THERE!"
Whoa! Two beautiful blue #birds ... #bird ... what are these?!
Be sure to mark it as "human" anyway so that it gets filtered out! 😃
Wow! What a find! These are the ones that really make it worth sorting through all the empty images! 😃 #deer #buck #male
Just take your best guess. 😃 No need to worry about being perfect!
Sometimes the cameras just get turned around. Good spotting of a bird even with the flipped camera! 😃
Extra fluffy indeed! Great find!!
I think it's trash bags on the fence?
There's a #deer --!
Aw, they're just cuddling! (Don't actually know!)
Better yet, mark as "nothing here" so that it gets filtered out! 😃
I don't think that the photos are sorted exactly by camera. Not sure. These get filtered out quickly! 😃
Wow! That's another first!!
Shoot! I guessed raccoon. Possums seem to do the most blurs.
This one has me super confused... #whatis ?
Ooh, this is the first of these I've seen! Stork, heron, crane? Either way, should have migrated... look at that #ice !
It's a scent bag. Helps attract the animals! 😃
I agree @Noctiferix -- you can tell this one is newer because the first comment is 3 hours ago!
#deer #fawn
Oh, hey, now that I look closer, I do see the fire. And you're right, that's a firefighter. There's a story there!
I think it's just lighting oversaturation...
Oooh, a gorgeous shot. 😄
Smelly guy likes the smelly thing! 😄
Absolutely fantastic!!! #dailyzoo
Cool #coyote #headdown
Lovely buck #deer --!
Gorgeous. What a find!!
Wow, what a lovely pic. I wonder why the thumbnail on it is broken.
I really love seeing the coyotes. What a great pic!
#dailyzoo idea. 😄
Always love seeing the dappled fawns!
An impala? Must have wandered over from Snapshot Serengeti! 😄
Look closely... #mouse in the tree!
Woodchuck?
Adorable! What a find! 😃
Hm, the thumbnail seems to have broken on this pic. Not going to be too concerned, unless it happens more...
They're coming for your snausages!
Dog, right? Interesting to see one out so late, no leash... ?
Motion blur... #actionsquirrel ... ?
I think correct on #opossum --!
Might be a coyote, actually... looks big for a fox? Great find either way!!
Always love seeing the coyotes!
Looks a lot like a coyote to me... if you look closely, you can see the black tip on the tail!
It's still visible in the profile, too? I wonder if we can do something about that, at least.
Super bright red! Very nice!
Scent bag, perhaps?
Great pic!
Absolutely gorgeous!!
That's quite a few raccoons! I wonder if the one in the top right is a juvenile?
Hm, some joker tagged this as human.
WHOA! That's a first for me! What a find, @jaxbaq --! #duckling
Something in that bottom right corner, but I have no idea... !
Very clear #headdown deer!
Hah! It's flagged as human now, but this one might amuse the scientists who can see past that filter. 😃
Cute! You can see the spots! 😃
Wow, super pretty. She looks comfy. Great find!
#rat --!
Very tricky one. Opossum?
Almost missed you there, #deer
Two #deer in #winter
Little thief! Hahaha!
Yes! Great #actionsquirrel -- they always look so determined!
These sorts of shots really bring home how close nature lives to us! 😃
I have to say, I love the wild canines (coyotes and foxes) with their winter coats. 😄
Oh, THAT explains it! I keep seeing those and wondering. I feel silly now. 😃
We can't do humans on Daily Zoo, unfortunately. 😃 In fact, fairly soon, this image should vanish and be replaced by the HUMAN logo. 😃
Aw, cute!!
Talk about your interesting camera placements... !
Very cute! Great find! ❤️
Nice example of a #head-down #coyote
Oh, that's a pretty one! As I recall, we got a LOT of snow in the winter of 2011! #dailyzoo
Good eyes!!
Love that coat color!
Gorgeous #red-fox in fluffy winter coat!
Probably just an #actionsquirrel ...
I wonder if raccoons can catch fish that are actually swimming in water... Maybe #dailyzoo . I really like this photo!
That's rare! Good find!!
Apparently not to the foxes! 😄
It took me a moment to spot HIM! 😃
Is that what a group of 'coons is called?
There are TONS of coyotes here in Chicago, @mudkip201 !
Look at those antlers! What a buck!
Ah, it is! With #headdown. At first I thought that its ears were its eyes lit by a flashbulb!
Ooh, a pack! #dailyzoo candidate!
I think you are correct! 😃
Hah!
The name is catching on! 😄
A good #dailyzoo candidate!
Arthur is actually a great example of how people can think they're getting repeat images when they actually aren't! 😃
Skunks ARE cute! If it weren't for the... thing... we'd universally find them adorable. 😃
Yeah, although for some reason, the thumbnail still appears in the recents view. Probably fairly low-priority, though. 😃
Coons on the prowl; very cool shot!
Maybe a domestic dog of some type? Definitely going to need a scientist for this one.
Hey, Arthur-cam caught an actual animal!
Welcome to the project, @ObservatoryPark ! I'm not an scientist, but it looks very much like a rabbit to me. 😃
If you're unsure, @ForestPreserve, you can probably just mark "neither!"
Oh, wow, what a gorgeous #coyote
@ForestPreserve, just how often are you seeing Arthur while classifying? 😃 We probably have quite a few Arthur images.
Hahahah! It's a different photo each time, but I'm guessing the wind blowing that plant is setting off the camera trap.
This is cool! As I understand it, coyotes have very interesting and variable pack behavior. Do they form urban packs, too?
I see a plastic bag to the left... and something on the tree that might just be an oddly-shaped knot...
Ooh, that's cool! #dailyzoo idea.
Don't worry about it! Many people will see each image, so mistakes don't matter too much. Someone else will tag the deer. Thanks!! 😃
That's a far better idea and I hadn't even remembered that you could do that. Take mfidino@lpzoo.org's word for it! 😃
And a domestic #dog.
Hi @bonnie123, this is a gray squirrel for sure. Fox squirrels are reddish with thinner tails. More info in the classification field guide!
Hi @bonnie123, this blog post (http://bit.ly/14MLF0x) suggests "neither;" however you could also mark head-down b/c it's very clear, I think
Yes!
Let's get that hashtagged: #opossum! 😃
#deer, right?
Red #fox ?
Gorgeous #coyote!
Couldn't tell if coyote or #fox... thank you @mfidino@lpzoo.org for clarifying!
I originally thought it was a woodchuck, but now I see it's an #opossum.
Hooray, finally a #fox!
Serious #raccoon business to attend to!
#skunk ?
Squirrels never stop being cute, no matter how many of them you see! 😃
Nice to see a live #opossum! I seem to only see the car-smashed ones around the city. 😦
Maybe I'm seeing things, but could that be a snake?
Fox #squirrel ... ? Or gray?
Young #coyote interested in the scent bag?

Nice find!!
Very cute! Great find! ❤️
Cute!!
