    Looks like a possum to me. I have seen many at my house with broken off tails. Don't know if they froze off, or was it an encounter with a coyote.

    This is an opossum. In the northern part of their range (e.g. Chicago) opossum tend to get frostbite on their toes, ears, and tails over the winter. This little marsupial will generally only make it through one winter, but they tend to have better over-winter survival rates in urban areas than they do in the forest (more food, shelter, etc.).
