A mouse?

    looks bigger than a mouse, but smaller than a rat. could it be a bat?

    The black part the scent bag that attracts the animals. See the "luring the animals" discussion, but we've previously been told that phenylacetic acid is what provides the scent. It's probably cheaper than any Calvin Klein product.

    I think you are correct that the shiny disk has something to do with triggering the camera. But we've had a few cases where the animals have made off with the scent bag, so it doesn't seem to be 100% necessary. See ACH000cz6l for a coyote caught in the act.
